Pollution violators are punished

JIADING has punished 60 enterprises, stopped production at 42 factories, detained two people and ordered 60 other businesses to make improvements because of their pollution violations.

By December 20, Jiading had received 21 lists and 159 cases of pollution suspects from the central government’s environment protection inspectorate. So far the district has provided feedback on 138 of them.

The environment supervision action from the central government is not only supervision on enterprises, but also on all levels of government in Jiading. “We must deepen our understanding, identify the outstanding problems and find solutions,” said Ma Chunlei, Party secretary of Jiading District.

At a meeting on environment supervision on November 29, Jiading announced the setting up of a team headed by district director Zhang Xi. It will be responsible for coordinating with the environment protection inspectorate.

On December 9, Jiading environment authority found a company in an industrial park discharged waste water into rainwater pipe directly instead of via the municipal sewage system. The company was fined 275,000 yuan (US$39,855) and ordered to make immediate improvements. The owner of the company was detained by police.

The operator of the industrial park was summoned as similar cases were also found in the park. The operator said all the polluted water will be discharged into the municipal sewage system by end of the year.

In Nanxiang, 15 restaurants in a community were reported to be violating regulations, including excessive noise and operating without a license. Local authorities checked the site on the same day and punished violators.

There are 12 enterprises along the bank of Liuhe River in the Shanghai territory, and only three have environmental approval. The other nine have either been suspended or had their operations curtailed.
