Poetry gaining in popularity with pupils

STUDENTS nod their heads as they recite lyrics to ancient music, while dance group students wave their fans to the rhythm of the song, scenes often seen at Huajiang Primary School — “The branches of plum in my court recess, along in biting winter start to dress. I know these petals are not flakes of snow, for far and near their hidden perfumes blow.”

The singing of ancient poetry has been introduced to 37 high schools and 39 primary schools in Jiading.

Jiading has made great efforts to promote national culture in recent years, said Yao Wei, director of Jiading Education Bureau,

There’s folk music at Nanxiang Primary School, Shanghai’s Huju Opera at Qingshui Road Primary School, seal cutting at Fangtai Primary School, Peking Opera at Ludi Primary School and kite-making at Caowang Primary School.

Huajiang Primary School has adopted songs by Wang Wei’er and composer Yi Fenglin in the Chinese and music class. “The practice has achieved initial success in building the school’s cultural atmosphere,” said Zhu Xiaolu, the headmaster.

Charm and beauty

“Students feel the charm and beauty of ancient poetry through reading, singing, dancing and painting,” Zhu added.

In May 2010 the poetry-singing practice made a successful debut at Xincheng Road Primary School, marking the formal start of introducing traditional Chinese poetry in schools’ music classes. Jiading Education Bureau complied a book based on the poems.

“The book has been used for different purposes at different levels. For example, primary school students sing songs with body rhythms and performances, and for senior grade three to seven students they paint based on the poetry, and from grade eight to high school students adopt various art forms to perform with the poems,” Zhu said.
