Picking up from school less of a problem
LI Rong, a young mother, used to worry when she had to do overtime and needed to persuade her neighbor to pick up her child from school. At that time, classes were usually over at 3pm to 4pm but she had to work until 5pm to 6pm.
Her husband works downtown and there’s a considerable distance between her child’s school and her husband’s office.
Like many double-income families, picking up her child after school every day was a daily problem.
But now there’s some good news. All primary schools will extend their services by 30 minutes in a bid to solve the problem.
The extension of services will focus on extra-curricular activities. Students will be given a free choice on which activities to take, with many options available, or just start their homework in class.
The district education bureau doesn’t allow teaching or formal classes during the extended time.
Yao Jiaze, a third grader at Jiading Experimental Primary School, chose her ideal extra curriculum activity — learning to play the ukulele. Now, after every school day, she will learn to play ukulele from her music teacher. Huang Siyu, a second grader at the same school, joined the young correspondent club and takes a taekwondo class.
Defu Road Primary School invited a football club in the district to train students in soccer skills with their coaches — veteran players from China Super League clubs.
“Playing football is great fun and it is fascinating to play football after class,” said Wen Zimu, who won best player title last year at Defu Road Primary School.
The primary school also has dancing classes and Lego activities.
The private Yuhong Primary School invited parents who specialized in bead making, basketball and drum dance to train students in their skills.
“I love square dancing and can play waist drum dancing. I teach children to practice waist drum dancing when I have spare time,” said a parent of one of the school’s students.
Other schools, including Fangtai School, have a system to check students are picked up by their parents.
They use mobile instant message app WeChat, and print student forms or duty forms to ensure students’ safety.
“When I don’t need to do overtime, time will be just right to pick up my child,” said Li.
More useful and colorful extra curriculum activities will be added to schools for the benefit of students.
