Night runners care for the community
A group of runners, each with a flashing armband and a smartphone, go out at night with the aim of uncovering illegalities and security problems in local communities.
The group, started by police officer Jin Tianyou, has grown from eight members to 47 at present.
As a night runner himself, Jin had the idea of combining exercise with community management.
Xu Yipu is one runner who joined the scheme.
“I work during the day and have spare time at night,” Xu said.
He reported problems discovered through WeChat which include junk mislaid in buildings and community hygiene problems. Xu has also persuaded people to stop dropping litter during his nighttime runs.
Jin, Xu and the other runners are often referred to as “fireflies” because of the flashing lights on their arms and the quick action that results from their activities.
Feedback is made through WeChat immediately after they receive reports while measures to correct problems will be taken within a week.
One volunteer took a photograph of a pile of discarded rubbish in a building on her night run and posted it on WeChat. It was removed the next day. Management staff sent their feedback through WeChat — with a photo taken after the scene was cleared.
With no fixed routes or regular timetable, Jin’s team forms a formidable network to improve local security and the environment.
Jin’s team has won the support of the local authority and his initiative is expected to be replicated and applied to other communities in the Jiading Industrial Zone.
“Community management shall keep pace with the times. As a form of innovation, Jin’s initiative promotes community volunteering with an effective supplement,” said Feng Jian, Party secretary of Shengxin community.
