New way to pay for learner drivers
PAYING for driving lessons by the hour is becoming increasingly popular in Shanghai with 10 driving schools now taking part in a trial allowing learners to choose instructors and time slots. Unlike traditional driving schools, the new service allows learners to pay after lessons on an hourly basis and to drive the car alone with the instructor.
Anting Driving School is providing the service in Jiading. Located inside the Shanghai International Circuit, the school has 200 cars and over 240 instructors with about 5,600 learners.
A learner surnamed Dong chose to learn with Anting Driving School though she lives in downtown Xuhui. The one-on-one mode and the flexibility are the two main reasons for her decision.
“It’s very convenient to choose the time and instructor you like before going to the class,” Dong said.
“The school offers more options compared to traditional driving schools. You can decide when you want to take the class, such as learning after work.”
Learners are able to change instructors online without informing the school, according to Shen Junyi, the Anting school’s general manager.
The school’s cars are equipped with GPS, cameras and fingerprint identifiers to ensure teaching quality and guarantee driving time. “The GPS equipment will show the mileage of the car while the cameras are monitoring the instructor’s behavior,” Shen said.
Apart from theoretical studies, each trainee will have to complete 42 lessons in the car and seven hours of simulated driving. “On average, it takes 42 days for our trainees to complete all required classes and pass all four tests. The fastest one was 35 days,” Shen said.
Enrollment and test fees are 1,300 yuan (US$200) at the Anting Driving School with the hourly rate for lessons priced from 60 to 180 yuan.
