New companies benefit from more research facilities

More high-end laboratories in Jiading are becoming accessible to enterprises under district government efforts to support local startups.

So far, 48 colleges and scientific research institutes in Jiading provide external services, including Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, East China Computation Research Institute and Tongji University Jiading Campus.

Shanghai Zhikun Semi-Conductor Co Ltd in Juyuan New Area has just benefited. The company had to spend more on research and development to improve the quality of its core product. However, the equipment needed would have cost about 5 million yuan (US$780,000), too heavy a burden for a new company.

Fortunately, it learned that the Shanghai Internet of Things Public R&D Test & Service Platform in Juyuan could provide them with both the equipment and professionals for a relatively low price.

There are five such research institutes in Juyuan and the district has been thinking about how to use them to support the development of local scientific enterprises. It has compiled a list of facilities open to enterprises.

Meanwhile, the Jiading government is about to introduce some agencies to provide professional services concerning R&D and intellectual property rights.

By 2020, Juyuan will have established five state-level platforms of industry-university-research cooperation, 10 public R&D service platforms and 20 municipal-level professional service agencies.
