Museum tells the tale of ancient man
ARCHEOLOGICAL findings from the Zhoukoudian site in southwest Beijing, portraying life in north China hundreds of thousands of years ago, are on display at Jiading Museum.
A number of fascinating relics are on show, including the model of a Peking Man’s skull and more than 140 stoneware tools he would have used.
Historical documents are also on display which reveal the discovery and excavation of the site, the largest and most abundant of other contemporaneous sites in China.
In 1929, archeologists found an unbroken fossilized skull of what they called Peking Man in Zhoukoudian. They lived about 230,000-710,000 years ago, retaining some ape-like features while using fire and simple tools.
They chipped simple stoneware by beating rocks and chopped twigs into sticks. Their life in groups, tens of people working together and sharing food, formed early primitive society.
The exhibition has virtual reality equipment depicting the life of Peking Man. When visitors start to walk with the equipment, Peking Man shows up in groups, picking fruit or hunting on the hill. Visitors can also see them making a fire or stoneware via the equipment.
The show, entitled “I came from the ancient times,” has toured many cities in China, including Kunming in Yunnan Province, Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province, and Zunyi in Guizhou Province.
The exhibition opened in Jiading in April and will run through June 25. It has already attracted thousands of visitors. During the three-day Labor Day holiday from April 29 to May 1, around 4,000 people visited the museum.
“When I read about the exhibition, my wife and I immediately decided to come and see it,” said Zhang Huaxiang, a history lover. “The Zhoukoudian site is an important window to learn the evolution of human beings.”
