Masterpieces from 3 generations of master painters
A painting exhibition is held at Han Tianheng Art Museum in Jiading District to mark the 120th anniversary of the birth of Chinese painting master Zheng Wuchang.
This exhibition, featuring artwork by the artist and his son Zheng Xiaotong and grandson Zheng Rengang, is in memory of the artist who made a major contribution to the modern Chinese art history.
Among 150 works of the three generations, half were created by Zheng Wuchang himself, and many of them are appearing in public for the first time.
Several academic seminars are held during the exhibition.
Zheng Wuchang specialized in landscape paintings and was also good at flowers and figures. He could combine poems, calligraphy and painting in his works.
His paintings of willow showed the beauty of the tree in different weathers and seasons; his paintings of flowers took the essence of western painting styles; his paintings of bamboo and Chinese cabbages were vivid.

Momo Pan
Zheng Wuchang (1894-1952) was a painter and calligrapher with a distinctive style. He was also a litterateur, educationist, collector, critic of art history, social activist and publisher. He was director of the Zhonghua Book Company’s art department and professor at Shanghai Art College, Xihu National Art College and Xinhua Art College.
In Zheng’s 30-year career in Shanghai, he made several outstanding contributions. He spent five years preparing for the publication of the “The Complete History of Chinese Painting” in 1929, which illustrated the development and changes of Chinese painting art in detail. It was also the first general history of Chinese painting made by Chinese people.
In 1939, his landscape paintings won the golden prize at the New York International Art Exposition, which involved artists from 72 countries around the world.
He organized the influential Bee Painting Society and China Painting Society which launched academic discussions and published artistic journals.
To cultivate more artistic talent for China, Zheng opened Lutai Pavilion to teach painting and calligraphy and trained a lot of painting and calligraphic masters.
Zheng also created the type matrix of regular script of Chinese characters, which ended the domination of the Western printing industry in the Chinese market.
He also organized the Jiawu Tonggeng Society with Wu Hufan and Mei Lanfang to oppose foreign invaders’ influence. As a Chinese painting master, Zheng felt it his mission to construct and preserve Chinese culture. He insisted that Chinese painting should promote the Chinese spirit and world peace.
Zheng’s children inherited his will to promote Chinese art. Both his son, Zheng Xiaotong, and his grandson, Zheng Rengang, are famous painters.
