Local firm at forefront of detecting radiation

DISASTERS such as Chernobyl and Fukushima have highlighted the need for devices to detect harmful radiation.

Jiading-based Simmax Technology Co Ltd recently invested 10 million yuan (US$1.46 million) to establish a lab for the development of a device used in detecting nuclear radiation—a technology currently owned only by three companies in America and one in Latvia.

The aim is to produce a device which will be able to tell instantly whether a product has been contaminated without opening the packaging.

Imported devices

Established in Jiading in 2003, the company has spent over a decade developing core technologies in the field and had made a number of breakthroughs.

“For a long time, we have been using imported nuclear detection devices,” said Xu Huaizhong, its general manager.

Simmax had its first success in 2010 when its E2008 explosion detector played a key role in Shanghai’s World Expo.

Vice manager Wu Zhenxia said 48 detectors costing 7 million yuan were put to use in the northwest part of the city.

It could detect a problem in around 10 seconds.

After some improvements, the detector later served at the Asian Games, International University Sports Federation, Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia and other major events.

Around 1,000 such devices are now in operation in over 500 stations on 20 Metro lines, including Metro Line 11 in Shanghai.

Radiation sensors

In 2013 the company independently developed a radiation measuring facility to test a few dozen nuclear matters in environmental samples and put the facility into mass production, thus making it one of the three major suppliers in the world.

Since 2015, the facility has been applied in China’s nuclear power plants at Daya Bay, Ningde and Sanmen.

The latest lab project is among the national list of high-end equipment manufacturing and supported by many scientific research institutions in Jiading.

Simmax says it’s confident in performing the task.
