Lasers point the way to profits
Chen Guanghui, owner of a metal accessory manufacturer in Yiwu, China’s small commodity market in Zhengjiang Province, saw his business boom after he spent 1.2 million yuan (US$193,548) to purchase two laser cutting machines last year.
“As custom-made products and DIY gets prevalent, laser cutting technology becomes popular as it is good at processing accessories with complicated design,” Chen said.
Chen bought another eight laser cutting machines recently.
The key components of Chen’s laser-cutting machine are manufactured by Shanghai Feibo Laser Technologies in Jiading.
Upbeat about the booming market, the company expects sales to break through 60 million yuan this year and hopefully reach 100 million yuan. It took more than 40 million yuan of orders in the first two months of this year.
“Laser technology has a broad prospect that it can be widely used in industries, healthcare and scientific research,” said Li Xiaojun, general manager of Feibo.
For example, 2-Micron Fiber Lasers with a maximum power of 160 watts have been widely used in various types of minimally invasive surgery.
Its energy is very concentrated with a shallow penetration so it won’t have impact on healthy tissue surrounding focus of infection.
Feibo is collaborating with several domestic scientific and research institutions to create a highly accurate fiber laser 3D printer.
“It’s important to stay close with the market.” Li said.
“That will greatly shorten the period for scientific achievements to be transformed into products.”
