Jiading residents put safety first

Six towns and sub-districts in Jiading have completed a safety evaluation and completed making community risk maps following the New Year’s Eve stampede on the Bund in downtown Shanghai that left 36 people dead.

They are Nanxiang and Anting towns, Juyuan New Area, Jiading Industrial Zone, Xincheng Road and Zhenxin sub-districts. Other towns and sub-districts are expected to complete the task by year end.

The community risk maps adopt signs and pictures in drawing maps to raise safety awareness among residents and prevent disasters.

On the safety map of Anting, viewers can see venues with potential safety risks marked by signs in three tiers from high to low. Red round dots are the highest level alert.

For example, the houses under high-voltage power lines in Zhujia Village are marked by red round dot as it has high safety hazards.

An orange square covers gas stations or venues that tend to be flooded, including a road in Xingguang Village which has rivers on both sides.

Residents have played a role in making the community risk maps, increasingly their practicality.

“Residents are familiar with surrounding environment and found a lot of safety risks and put forward many constructive opinions,” Zhang Yaping from Jiading Civil Affairs Bureau said.

The process of making the maps also gave residents a better idea of the risk factors around. Guo Yushan, a resident of Nanxiang, lives in Hongxiang Community, and he learnt from community risk map that the crossing of Guyiyuan Road and Yufeng Road tended to have more traffic accidents, and there was a gas station and a fuel station nearby. “As I got to know the full picture I can get better prepared for risk factors,” Guo said.

Measures have been taken to reduce risks. For example, traffic police added officers at the crossing of Minfeng Road and Moyu Road near Century Mart in Anting.
