Jiading equipment launched into space

CHINA launched the world’s first quantum satellite “Mozi” at the Jiuquan Satellite Center in Gansu Province on August 16. Its successful launch marked the country’s a big step forward in space science research.

Many parts of the Mozi Satellite were manufactured by Jiading companies.

Shanghai Aerospace Electronics Company developed equipment for the satellite that included terminal unit, responder, microwave network and packaging boxes. It means that the communication, translation and commands are delivered by these Jiading-made machines.

The remote control and telemetry unites were combined for the first time for Mozi. “The two units act like the ‘ears’ and ‘eyes’ for the satellite. Once they work together as a whole, they become the ‘brain’ for the satellite, processing control commands and telemetry information through the responder,” said Du Yuelong, the company’s product designer.

Such a design greatly improves the efficiency of data transmission. As it adopts a universal communication protocol, “the communication between Mozi and other satellites or spacecraft won’t be a problem,” Du said.

Du also designed a backup “brain” for the satellite in case of emergency, which will enable the ground control.

The launch of Mozi also excited researchers at Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics. “Our ‘child’ took a ride on Mozi and set out!” The “child” is a space high-speed coherent laser communication load. It will conduct a series of laser communication experiments with ground control centers in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Beijing.
