Jiabei Country Park taking shape

JIABEI Country Park will open its first phase to the public in a test run in August, and it is expected to open to public officially by the end of September.

Visitors can find the park by driving along the Shanghai-Yixing Expressway from the south to the north and take a turn at Pengmen Road M.

It will be one of the first country parks to open in Shanghai and one of seven country parks in the city. The other country parks will be in other suburban areas, including the districts of Minhang, Jinshan, Songjiang and Qingpu.

Jiabei Country Park is at the northwestern part of Jiading’s downtown area.

It is in the area surrounded by Shenyang-Haikou Highway, North Jiading-Songjiang Road, Jiading-Anting Expressway and Country Park Avenue under plan.

With a planned area of about 14 square kilometers, the park will be set up in two phases, and the first phase project will cover an area of more than 7.3 square kilometers.

Farming land reserved

Workers have planted Chinese tallow trees, red maples, sweetgums from North America along three avenues in addition to the original cedars.

In the autumn, the three avenues will put on a charming display of brown, reddish yellow and red colors, respectively.

In the country park, there are still large areas of farmland equaling to more than 420 standard football fields for the cultivation of rice and grains.

Farmers also planted rice of different colors on a piece of land equaling to around seven standard football fields.

The country park operators have also planned areas for the growing of grapes, kiwifruit, bamboo and aromatic crops.

Visitors will able to spend some of their leisure time in areas that will feature bird life and which will be delightful places for children.

Forests planned

In addition, there are some forests specially designed for romantic rambles, get-togethers, rest or even for physical exercises or practicing martial arts.

A corridor with 800-meter Chinese wisteria plants on both sides will also be set up. In three to five years, it should be one of the most charming wisteria corridors in the city.

“In addition to countryside scenery and holidaymaking, the park is to improve the ecological environment in the area and improve the quality of urban life quality,” an official at the construction headquarter of the country park said.

The park operator has done a lot on land reclamation, including dredging of rivers, construction of roads, irrigation canals and facilities. The environment has been improved significantly so far.

As land resources are scarce in China, the Jiabei Country Park operators have tried their best to keep the farmland, forest, rivers in their original state.

Inside and surrounding the park there is a network of rivers running over 20 kilometers in length. The park operator has also added roads, facilities and grass areas when combining the seven forests in the park.

The shape and style of 17 bridges inside the Jiabei Country Park are different from each other. The operators set up an investigation team on the cultural resources.

Team members paid visits to the elderly nearby and checked large number of regional documents and literature in ancient and modern times.

After a thorough investigation, the operator decided the names of the bridges based on the legendary stories of local celebrities and folk tales.
