Home Study library opens its 1st branch
Jiading District’s 24-hour Home Study public library opened its first branch at the Anju Life Plaza on Yinxiang Road this month.
Jiading District continues to improve its public library service system by establishing a comprehensive network of libraries and reading communities in villages, enterprises and commercial areas in the district.
So far, the district has established two district public libraries, 12 libraries in communities and towns and 240 libraries in villages.
Home Study, in the Juyuan New Area, focuses on interactive activities including book sharing and reading parties to improve the reading experience. Residents can apply to the library to host a customized “reading party” or other events.
At present, Home Study has seen about 10,000 books lent and returned. It has issued over 500 reading cards in the past eight months. “We are now working on regulations on many aspects including reader’s feedback. For the next step, forming an effective interactive mechanism will be our main focus,” said Ma Huiyi, director of Juyuan New Area Culture and Sports Center.
Jiading will build five more Home Study libraries with different characteristics this year — in Nanxiang Town, Waigang Town, Anting Town, Jiading Industrial Park and the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Building in Juyuan New Area.
Meanwhile, the district is opening up reading resources of local schools to the public at weekends. Every weekend, the library of Jiangqiao Primary School will become a “Weekend Home Study,” opening to the residents living in the surrounding communities.
In the Weekend Home Study, the 400-square-meter area is divided into functional spaces facilitated with research and exchange systems and child-parent reading.
The study is well-decorated and has various pieces of equipment to meet the demand of different groups. For example, the children’s space has soft cushions, colorful chairs and cabinets, and a reading area shaped like a fishing net.
Recently, Jiading also launched a public reading map which allows residents to check service information of libraries around the district.
“We aim to offer residents better reading experiences by integrating reading resources and improving reading network,” said Huang Ying, director of Jiading District Library.
