High-tech labs open doors to the public

Shanghai Internet of Things Center recently opened four of its test laboratories to the public, displaying 50 pieces of advanced equipment valued at 40 million yuan (US$6.44 million).

The four labs are built for tests of electromagnetic compatibility, protocol conformance, interoperability and physical properties. Different from many other labs, the lab for electromagnetic compatibility test is vast but simple. In experiments, the lab will be full of electromagnetic waves of different frequencies, just like a huge network to connect all the stuff in the lab.

In the lab for physical properties tests, there is a piece of equipment called a wireless channel fading simulator. It’s one of the core pieces in the lab. It can simulate various outdoor environments such as ocean, forest and desert for scientists to test wireless channels so that they don’t have to carry heavy equipment for field tests.

An intelligent traffic control system is under test in the lab for protocol conformance. The system plants sensors on the road and judges traffic conditions through geomagnetism and vibration. Then, it will adjust the traffic lights automatically. The lab mainly tests how to send the signals of geomagnetism and vibration back to the computer.

The lab is applying for the CNAS certificate, the highest national accreditation for laboratories.

In the future, local medium and small enterprises will also be allowed to use these labs to carry out various tests.
