Great year for district’s crop yields

The total output of summer crops in Jiading District rose 7.2 percent to 17,600 tons this year. The total area also increased 1553.5 mu (103.6 hectares), to 52,081 mu.

As the main crop of summer, wheat yields were outstanding with average output per mu reaching 338 kilograms, up 4 percent from last year.

Weather conditions were favorable at all critical stages of growth and development of wheat.

In addition, efforts by farmers and agricultural technicians provided indispensable guarantee as well.

During autumn sowing season last year, Jiading increased the ratio of early harvest crops, optimized crop patterns and expanded the use of high-yield, high-quality and early-maturing varieties.

To improve harvesting efficiency, they also planted some species that developed later.

Jiading adopted advanced agricultural machinery and low-toxic, low-persistent pesticides to raise efficiency and ensure food safety.

The district government purchased the pesticides and provided 80 percent subsidies for farmers. Each grower can receive a subsidy of 300 yuan per ton, of which 200 yuan is provided by Shanghai Municipal Government while Jiading subsidizes 100 yuan.

Over 80 percent of straw has been returned to the fields to avoid air pollution caused by burning and also increase the ratio of organic material and moisture in the earth, which is beneficial for wheat.
