Firms help Gansu students get online
TWO Jiading-based organizations have sent more than 30 computers to schools in the mountainous areas in Northwest China’s Gansu Province to help students get to know the outside world through Internet access.
The second-hand computers were donated by Shanghai enterprises.
A video game company based in Nanxiang donated 10 computers for the project while several individuals gave laptops and printers.
The project received more than 50 computers and related devices in just a few days, said Yin Xiaohua, the man who launched the project.
Shanghai Zhonggu Charity offered to help Yin as it has experience in collecting old computers for charity and has a professional team that can test old computers.
When everything was ready, Yin and five volunteers took the computers to Gansu and hoped to provide local students with free computer classes. However, on their way to Dahe School in the city of Dingxi, the truck was hit by a snowstorm and there was a serious risk of an accident.
Yin decided offload the computers and hired a tractor with snow chains to take them to the school.
The school, which has eight grades and 58 students in total, lacks computers and other electronic devices needed for IT lessons. Many of the students had never used a computer before.
Yin and his colleagues set up an IT classroom in the school and were immediately surrounded by students. Some of them learned how to input data and use a keyboard in just 20 minutes.
