Firefighting volunteers save vital minutes

WITH Jiading District expanding its urban areas in recent years and its population growing, the demand for the fire service has also increased significantly.

Jiading has six fire stations, including one just established and yet to be put into operation.

In some remote areas in the district, firefighters can take more than 10 minutes to arrive at the scene of a fire.

Since the beginning of the year, Jiading has set up 167 mini fire stations across the district to set up a system to deal with fires in less than five minutes.

The mini stations are equipped with extinguishers, hoses and water guns, fire hats, uniforms and protective boots. Some stations in rural areas are equipped with a pump that can be carried. With it firefighters can take water from nearby and spray with a range of 30 meters and to a height of 20 meters.

To make the system even more effective, the mini stations are set up near villages or neighborhood committees. Each station has a team of volunteer firefighters of no fewer than 10 people who receive a professional training once a month.

“Without the mini fire station in the village, I might have been homeless,” Chen Yan from Dahong Village in Malu Town said.

In July his house caught a fire due to old electric wiring at around 2pm on July 18. He called for help. In just less than five minutes, 15 firefighters arrived and had the fire under control within two minutes. Damage to property was minimal.
