Farmers busy with this year’s rice crop
THE harvesting of rice has started. On October 24, Jiading District held a site meeting in Waigang Town, marking the first rice harvest of the autumn.
After heavy rain and gales on the previous day, farmer Chen Zhong in Huating Town rushed to his farm to check the damage. Fortunately there was little loss due to the gale.
“Good harvest is at the door while the gale came, fortunately it brought more scare than hurt,” Chen said.
This year Chen planted 100 percent hybrid rice with 100 percent machine-transplanted seeding and achieved results he deemed satisfactory.
In Beixin Village of Huating where Chen lives, farmers planted 3,100 mu of rice (each mu is 667 square meters), with 70 percent hybrid rice and the rest high-yield rice.
An official with the local grain cooperative said: “It will be another harvesting year. It’s out of question to have 600 kilograms per mu.” With six harvesters and 12 dryers, it is expected the harvest will finish in 15 days.
According to plan, the 3,100 mu will be divided into three parts, with a reduced area used to plant green manure or lie fallow, with 380 yuan (US$55.32) and 250 yuan subsidy a mu respectively.
The seeding plan for vegetables in early winter has been brought forward as there was more rain in October with an average temperature of 18.4 degrees Celsius.
