F1 race marks start of auto festival

MERCEDES’ Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel share the world championship points lead after a tense battle in April 9’s 2017 Formula 1 Heineken Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai International Circuit.
It left both smiling broadly as they finished first and second, 6.2 seconds apart, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen third.
The race began on a rapidly drying track, with everyone bar Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz on intermediate tires. Sainz quickly rued that gamble, spinning off on Lap 1 and then needlessly brushing the wall as he made his way back onto the circuit.
It quickly became clear though that slicks were the right choice and others, including Vettel, pitted for dry rubber under a virtual safety car on the second lap, triggered when Force India’s Sergio Perez had collided with Williams’ Lance Stroll on the first, leaving the Canadian rookie beached in the gravel.
Leaders Hamilton, team mate Valtteri Bottas, Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and Verstappen stayed out until the fourth lap, when a real safety car deployment came as Antonio Giovinazzi crashed his Sauber exiting the final corner.
From that point, Hamilton and Vettel were in a world of their own.
The F1 race marked the beginning of the annual Shanghai Auto Culture Festival in Jiading. Apart from the Chinese Grand Prix, there are also four major events held over the month.
The Shanghai International Circuit’s Waterscape Square stages a variety of exciting, interactive activities, including an exhibition of Jiading-based EVCard smart cars.
The Chinese Traditional Culture Exhibition features activities include a tea ceremony, performances with traditional costumes, flower arrangements and drum performances.
Masters of auto-body painting and calligraphy will be showing off their art, putting ancient art forms onto contemporary canvasses.
The year’s events are not limited to the Shanghai International Circuit. An exhibit for Ferrari’s 70th anniversary will be at Shanghai Auto Museum.
The Alashan SEE Fund has been invited to Anting Life Hub for an interactive art exhibition, combining tourism, art and public welfare.
The Shanghai Automobile Exhibition Center will also host the Shanghai International RT and RV Camping Expo.
