Electric car rental outlets to double by end of year
JIADING District will double its rental outlets for electric cars to 482 by the end of this year, a further step forward to turning Shanghai into a green city.
The district will also put another 500 electric cars on the road by then, so that its residents will be able to rent an electric car within 500 meters anywhere, according to Shanghai International Automobile City, the company which runs the EVCard electric-car rental program.
In Shanghai the total number of EVCard rental outlets has topped 1,500. Jiading has 234, and its registered users hit 21,000.
In July the number of rental orders totaled 25,000, accounting for 36 percent of orders in the city.
The upgrade of the EVCard app has also attracted more users. Some placed 70 orders in a month, driving a total of 2,000 kilometers.
Still, some residents complained of not enough rental outlets near their communities.
The company said that in Jia-ding, the ratio of the number of electric cars to the number of rental outlets is 1.5:1, while across the city it is 1.3:1.
Thousands of electric cars are ready to be put on the road, but there is a ceiling on the number of electric car plates issued in Shanghai, so it will take some time before all of the cars are available, the company said.
Another problem is that the rental outlets are unevenly distributed.
The company is still trying to expand the EVCard program to more suburban areas.
By the end of July, it had built 111 electric car rental outlets in Chongming District and 204 in Fengxian District.
