Dredging brings rivers back to life
OVER 90 kilometers of small and medium waterways in Jiading District have been dredged and 10 more will have been cleaned by the end of this month, water authorities said.
Once a smelly river filled with waste and sludge, Youyi River in Jiading’s Huating Town is clean and its banks covered with plants. “The river has come to life now. People keep coming here for a walk and fishing,” said local resident Lu Jiansheng.
The river bottom is usually V-shaped if the flow is strong enough. But stones, sludge and solid waste broaden the bottom and make it U-shaped, leading to clogged and stinky waterways.
The water authority in Xuhang Town has been using water cannon to wash away the sludge, then pumping it to nearby fields.
“Waterway dredging efforts are wildly recognized by citizens. And more comprehensive measures will be taken this year to improve waterways,” said Li Huiqing, director of Nanxiang’s Water Resources Bureau.
A total 197 kilometers of smelly waterways are expected to be cleaned by the end of the year.
