District just keeps on getting smarter ...

JIADING District is currently accepting applications for this year’s second batch of projects under its smart city program.

“We ruled out some submitted projects that failed anticipation. So we have some funds for a second batch of qualified projects,” said Zhang Xiaoping, the district government’s information technology promotion chief.

Jiading initiated its smart city program in 2013.

A smart city is the integration of many smart systems, which require a unified platform to combine efforts of both government and companies.

For example, to most residents, a trip to a local community service center is compulsory if they want a document list to support applications. Thanks to the smart city program, residents in Jiangqiao Town can simply “consult” a smart robot in their community.

In 2015, community smart robots, the first of their kind nationwide, were set up in selected residential communities in Jiangqiao. The robot provides information on public services that include social insurance, medical care, social support, housing and family planning among many others. Currently the town has seven such robots for local communities with all Jiading’s sub-districts having one each.

The robots were developed by Shanghai Little I Robot Technology, which is based in Jiangqiao Town.

Jiading has built a smart sewage treatment plant in a business venture funded by both the government and private sector companies.

To local residents, environmental pollution is no longer a problem to worry about as the smart sewage plant will be completely underground with special equipment for sewage sludge treatment. Right above the structure, there will be a science museum to promote environmental protection.

The district’s science and technology commission says there are over 30 projects ongoing or in the planning stage under the smart city program. They cover a range of areas including a smart community, a smart village, and smart public transport.
