Cyclists in command at F1 circuit
THE 2016 Skoda Heros Jiading Carnival and Shimano Biker’s Festival were held at the Shanghai International Circuit in Jiading on October 2. The cycling final of the 2016 Shanghai Citizen Sports Meeting and the last leg of the 2016 Skoda Heros China Cycling Series also took place during the carnival.
More than 3,000 cyclists from around the country competed in six group events, — Elite Group, Under-25, U-35, Student Race, Masters and Women’s Race.
Zhu Runxiang, a key cyclist for the RTS Monton Racing Team China, said it was the first time he had competed on a Formula One circuit.
“It felt amazing as the circuit provides really good grip, very different from normal urban roads. I just love it. I will definitely be back here next year,” Zhu said.
Apart from professional cycling competitions, there were family contests where children could take part.
Wang Xiaohua, a resident in Malu Town in Jiading, registered a place online for his 3-year-old daughter.
“I’d love to teach my daughter to ride a bike. This can be a good start for her to enjoy the fun,” Wang said.
Deng Jiaye, who lives in Hongkou District in downtown Shanghai, cycled all the way to Jiading with his parents.
As a highlight of this year’s event, the host brought the Shimano Biker’s Festival and its 11 groups of competitions, providing the audience a different experience. Chinese cyclist Ji Cheng was invited to share his experience of competing in the Tour de France, Tour of Spain and Tour of Italy.
The carnival had 20 groups of competitions with organizers hoping cycling will appeal to people of all ages, for fitness or for recreation.
