Competition helps in finding a career

Jiading launched the 11th district professional skill competition covering 15 items this year. Participants are trained between July and September, while the final is in October.

Started in 2006, the competition has attracted over 10,000 skilled workers to show their skills on stage. The platform has elevated 209 senior workers and 173 technicians.

Xu Ruiying, a participant in 2015, has much to say about the competition.

Xu came to Volvo Car China’s Research and Development Center in 2012, but soon felt the pressure in his post as he found that what he had learned appeared to be outdated at work.

“We learned about repairing mechanical vehicles at school, but sensors and other micro-computer technologies have been applied to the automobiles to make them more automatic,” said Xu.

So he signed up the skill competition as soon as he heard about it. Lucky for him, he was able to come top as an auto mechanic (Level 3 in National Vocational Qualification) after two months’ training. He was also named a Skilled Youth Worker and Skilled Technical Worker in Jiading.

“The competition has pushed me to improve and the awards have made my company recognize me,” Xu said.

At Shanghai Jiahua Continuous Education School, where the pre-competition training is held this year, Wang Xuemei is visiting her teacher who taught her Chinese bakery skills last year.

Wang came to Shanghai three years ago, but could not find a job until she studied at Jiahua and developed her bakery skills. Now she owns a Chinese bun shop on Zhenxin Street. “One needs to keep a skill that can at least support his or her livelihood,” Wang said.

Different classes are provided to train people so that they can be employed. Courses range from cooking and fashion design to garden.

The school will also set up nursery and housekeeping classes if demanded.
