Cleaner water after treatment projects

The renovation and upgrading of three sewage treatment plants in Jiading will be completed by the end of this year, when 300,000 tons of sewage in district will be purified daily under higher standards.

A total of 750 million yuan (US$112.4 million) is being invested to upgrade the Dazhong, Xincheng and Anting plants. The treated water quality is expected to reach level A and above after the project is finished.

In addition, an underground Nanxiang Sewage Treatment Plant, costing 1.4 billion yuan, will be built by the end of this year. The four plants will be able to treat a maximum of 675,000 tons of sewage in total.

The ability to reduce the ammonia and nitrogen content in water is crucial to the upgraded plants.

Ammonia and nitrogen content can have a fatal effect on water quality. Eutrophication caused by ammonia and nitrogen will speed up growth of algae, which will use up oxygen in the water and lead to the death of fish and other water creatures. Their bodies will affect water quality.

The Dazhong and Xincheng plants underwent upgrading in 2015.

“The water looked clearer after the first upgrade project, but it still contained high density of ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus and some organics,” said Ye Shuntao, chief engineer at the Dazhong plant.

“After the upgrade, our plant will be just like a street garden,” said Yang Weibiao, Dazhong’s general manager. “We also plan to build a pond to raise fish and shrimp to show the effect after the treatment.”
