Blood diseases hospital for Jiading

The world’s largest hospital for treating blood diseases will be built in Jiading District and is expected to begin operations in 2017.

The hospital will be capable of carrying out more than 1,000 hematopoietic stem cell transplant operations for patients with blood disease every year.

It will also fill in the gap of a specialist blood disease hospital in the city, said Zhou Lei, an official with the Shanghai Cord Blood Bank.

The first phase of the Blood Disease Hospital affiliated to China Stem Cell Group Co Ltd will be located at the junction of Yongsheng and Shuangding roads in Jiading and will cover an area of about 40,020 square meters.

Construction is expected to be completed next year.

About 1,000 hematopoietic stem cell transplants have been conducted in Shanghai since the bank was established in 2004. But there has been no specialist hospital in the area in the city until now, the bank said.

Currently, only 3,000 stem cell transplants are carried out every year across China due to a shortage of qualified hospitals and facilities, falling far short of demand for such operations.

There are only 100 hospitals that can handle stem cell transplants in China, and the specialist equipment they need is in short supply, the bank said.

There are about 5 million leukemia patients in China, with half of them children. That figure is growing by 40,000 every year.

But about 95 percent of these patients cannot receive effective stem cell transplants treatment in time due to shortage of medical facilities.

Ruijin Hospital and the Jiangsu Province Blood Institute will provide technical support to the new hospital.
