Auto industry gears up for change
China’s most important automobile technology event, SAE-China Congress & Exhibition, was held at Shanghai Automobile Exhibition Center in Jiading district last month.
Two members of the first generation of automobile developers in China, Li Gang and Chen Zhutao, received the prestigious Rao Bin award at the opening ceremony. It is named after the founder of China’s car industry.
The auto sector is a pillar of Jiading’s industrial manufacturing and is at a critical stage of transformation to be more intelligence and internet-based, said Gao Yun, district governer of Jiading.
This change will include the push by Shanghai International Automobile City for development of a smart car and new energy car hub in collaboration with Jiading Auto Innovation Harbor, SAIC and Tongji University. The outcome will make Jiading one of the top research and development centers in China.
Also at the opening ceremony, Jiading Auto Innovation Harbor was launched with a total investment of 1.5 billion yuan (US$240 million).
Several auto companies with leading technologies have already established facilities in the zone, including NextEVww. It is an electric car manufacturing company set up by Internet conglomerates, including Li Bin, founder of BitAuto.com, and Liu Qiangdong, Jd.com founder.
The company plans to launch its first electric supercar next year.
Other heavyweight enterprises involved include SAIC-Alibaba, Porsche Engineering, Pininfarina and Auto Space.
The 2015 SAE-China Congress & Exhibition involved two plenary sessions, three expert/academic forums, 38 symposiums and various test drive activities.
Displays of state-of-the-art energy-saving technology, engines, transmissions, powertrains, auto equipment, electronics, auto bodies and test technologies attracted around 10,000 visitors.
