Art of the normal: everyday objects that became collector’s items
AN exhibition of enamelware, some dating back as much as 100 years, has opened in Jiangqiao Town.
The enamel items were especially popular in the 1970s and 1980s as they were durable, affordable and often rather decorative.
The more than 1,000 enamel products collected by Xie Dangwei, former director of Shanghai Jiuxin Enamel Factory, include washbasins, cups, spittoons and other articles that were in daily use.
Having worked in the enamel industry for over 30 years, Xie has a long-standing emotional attachment to such items.
The exhibition is in four parts, covering the origin, development, flourishing and new age of enamelware in China.
It will be open to the public at 151 Jiayi Road, Jiangqiao Town until the end of February.
