Anting base to expand as demand for cars grows

SHANGHAI Volkswagen sends about 100,000 vehicles from a railway transport base in Anting Town every year.

The base was built on the former site of Anting Railway Station on Tashan Road four years ago. “When we first got here it was merely a wasteland,” said Lu Guoqing, an official with the base. “We had few people but had to do much work, from the platform design to the installation of lighting system.”

Now, hundreds of new cars of Volkswagen are parked at the base every day, waiting to be delivered.

Lu said railway transport has several advantages. It’s more environmentally friendly. It’s safer that road transport and more vehicles can be carried at a lower cost.

Currently the Anting base handles about 280 to 300 cars per day on average, and 600 to 700 cars at peak periods.

Last year, Shanghai Volkswagen sold about 1.53 million cars.

With the rapid growth of demand, the Anting base will be expanded over the next few months to add parking spaces for 400 more cars, increasing the total capacity to 1,100 cars.
