Airports challenge a boost for children

IT’S 50 kilometers from Shanghai Pudong International Airport to Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, eight kilometers more than a marathon.

The One Egg Run between the two has become a popular annual event. It was started by Shanghai United Foundation in 2011 and this year 676 teams of around 4,000 walkers completed the challenge in heavy rain in late April. The event was raising money for social charity programs for children with teams seeking donations from family and friends.

One of the teams taking part was “Dandelion’s Dream” from Jiading.

The six-strong team team was founded by Ding Yangyang, an intern at the Shanghai Fuyuan Social Worker Institute.

They didn’t know each other before. The other five members were actually recruited online.

Their target was to raise funds for a charity program to help children from migrant worker families to adjust to new living and studying environment in Jiading.

“We had to raise 20,000 yuan (US$3,100) as it is the minimum amount to apply for more financial support from Shanghai United Foundation,” said Zhu Wen, a social worker from Fuyuan.

As many children have to move from place to place with their parents, it can be tough for them to adjust to their changing environment, Zhu said.

“Dandelion’s Dream” came 57th among the 676 teams on the run with donations totaling 20,469.76 yuan.

Fuyuan plans to carry on with its “Dandelion’s Dream” project to help more children from migrant worker families to grow healthily both physically and mentally.
