Women’s international bike race set for island
NOWHERE is better than Chongming Island to go on a recreational bike-riding trip during pleasant weather in Shanghai. The eco-island’s winding roads, refreshing air and wooded scenery have made it one of the world’s favorite venues for international cycling races. This week, it will attract world cycling athletes to compete in an ideal environment of seaside views, flat roads and wide-open countryside. Jiang Xinhua reports.
Tour of Chongming Island 2014
The Tour of Chongming Island 2014 and UCI (International Cycling Union) Women’s Road World Cup 2014 will embark on the scenic island from May 14 to 18. This major international women’s cycling event will include two events, a top-rated 2.1 race from May 14 to 16 and a World Cup race on May 18. Both events are hosted by the International Cycling Union, the General Administration of Sports of China and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.
In its 12th year, the three-day Tour of Chongming Island 2014 is the highest-level event of its kind in Asia. The 316.1-kilometer tour has three stages, including the Qidong Binhai Industrial Park stage, Chongxi stage and island circuit.
“Different from former stage routes, the first stage on May 14 starts at Qidong Binhai Industrial Park in Qidong City, Jiangsu Province. It is the first time that the Tour of Chongming Island will be held across the provinces,” says Chen Yiping, deputy executive director of the organization committee.
The first stage starts at Qidong Binhai Industrial Park and tours through costal front, Chongqi Bridge and Dongping National Forest Park. The second stage, Chongxi stage, covers 113.7km and is the classic stage of the Tour of Chongming Island running along the coastline. As an alluvial island formed by silt carried along the Yangtze River, Chongming Island has beautiful river banks. The third stage, the Island Circuit, covers 10.8km per circuit and a total of 80.8km. There are two hot sprint points — at 20.2km and 50.5km on Dongmen Road.
UCI Women’s Road World Cup 2014
The UCI Women’s Road World Cup 2014 attracts top riders from 18 leading national and professional teams from 13 countries including Holland, Norway, Italy, Mexico, France, Germany and China.
Among these professional teams, there are many elite athletes including Italian rider Giorgia Bronzini from team Wiggle Honda, who ranked fourth at UCI Women’s Road World Cup 2013. Six female athletes from the China Chongming Giant team will compete with the world’s top athletes.
The 130km contest starts at Chongming Avenue and runs through Shanghai Changjiang Tunnel-Bridge, Dongtan Wetland and along the island’s coastline.
From 2003 to 2005, Chongming held successful national cycling races. In 2006, it hosted its first international event — a men’s tour of Chongming Island. In 2007 and 2008, the county became the host of Tour of Chongming Island. In 2009, it was granted the right to host the World Cup.
Cycling, as an environmentally friendly sport, is a good match for China’s ecological and low-carbon goals. With its flat terrain, mild climate, fresh air and forested land, the Chongming County is endowed with ideal conditions to host cycling contests.
Along the race course are rural expressway, roads along the Yangtze River and the renowned Changjiang Tunnel-Bridge connecting the island with downtown Shanghai.
