Residents keep busy during festival
Residents of Changning enjoyed a lively Chinese New Year holiday with various film screenings, exhibitions and other events.
It also was a prosperous holiday season for the district’s retailers as 24 major companies registered 190 million yuan (US$30.38 million) in sales revenue during the holiday period from February 18 to 24. The figure represented a 16.5 percent increase over the comparable period in 2014.
According to the district’s commission of commerce, purchases of household appliances shifted from items like televisions last year to kitchen appliances as the Year of the Sheep began.
Painting exhibitions featuring traditional shikumen lane house architecture added a touch of festival spirit to shopping malls.
Meanwhile, many families no longer relied on a home-cooked meals to ring in the new year as many decided to dine out. Six dining companies said they had total sales of around 950,000 yuan during the weeklong holiday, a 10 percent increase from 2014.
Bailian Xijiao Shopping Mall said business was brisk at indoor playgrounds like Tom’s World and Cartoony World with an increase in total sales of 6.4 percent.
The festival season was busy for cinemas. Led by the comedy “Running Man,” seven new films including Hollywood blockbusters and domestic productions gave film fans a good selection.
Chinese New Year was not all about food and entertainment though. During the seven-day break, 20 public sports facilities remained open. More than 6,000 residents took advantage as they tried to burn off some calories after gorging on festival delicacies.
Before the holiday, the venues prepared safety checks and maintenance as well as staffing personnel to ensure safe openings. And the district’s sports bureau informed residents in advance of opening hours and locations through its public WeChat account and official website.
Shanghai International Gymnastics Center’s gymnasium opened free to the public while the Changning Warm Water Swimming Pool opened every day at noon and in the evening during the holiday.
According to the Changning District Commission of Commerce, a new holiday trend was going on excursions to nearby destinations.
