Art festival returns with a big bang

Changning launched a schedule of cultural events for the remainder of the year as part of the 2015 Shanghai Citizens Art Festival on March 28, which was designated cultural service day.

The day featured 35 events and activities taking place around the district, including traditional operas, a pastel painting exhibition and more.

In 2013, the Shanghai Citizens Art Festival was established with the aim of enriching the cultural life of residents with year-round events. For three years, Changning has been participating in building community spirit through these cultural events.

This year’s cultural festival will bring 300 events like acrobatics and magic shows, as well as plays. An additional 100 seminars, 1.86 million books and magazines, 1,000 film screenings, 5,000 tickets and more will be available to residents in Changning.

Opera appreciation

During the spring, the district planned a traditional Chinese opera appreciation series, a creative weekend, reading festival, cultural heritage day events and more.

The traditional opera season started in March. The spring lineup included full-length dramas — both classic and contemporary — and 10 folk troupes for a group showcase with renowned actors Sun Xuchun, Qian Sijian and Chen Suping. The three provided guidance and comments to build a strong bridge between artists and opera lovers.

The summer segment will feature a dance competition, a decennial celebration of Song Huan Le Art Troupe (which literally means “bringing happiness”), a folk music series, community film festival and a reading month for youngsters.

Grass-roots interest

Organizers said the autumn will be packed with events attached to the China Shanghai International Arts Festival, the 2015 dance appreciation series, Changning weekly events as well as other performances and exhibitions.

The year will wrap up with winter events centered around a Chinese New Year theme.

In addition to these organized events, the district’s culture bureau also invited 35 artists from different fields to visit communities and instruct grass-roots groups and troupes.

Organizers said dance will be one of the main focuses of this year’s cultural festival. After successfully hosting the Shanghai Citizens Dance Competition in 2013, Changning will once again host the popular event. This year’s competition focuses on square dancing and everyone is welcome to join.

The district will also partner with the Chinese Dancers Association and host the 10th Lotus Awards China National Dance Competition. The event will bring some of the most professional troupes and productions to the district.
