Children’s writers, illustrators honored at Lit fest

A number of writers and illustrators from China and overseas were honored at the 2016 Chen Bochui International Children’s Literature Awards held in Baoshan District recently.

Chinese illustrator Zhu Chengliang was named Best Author of the Year during the awards ceremony at Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Arts Exposition on November 17.

Publishing house Flying Eye Books’ “Beautiful Birds” by Jean Roussen and illustrated by Emmanuelle Walker was one of five winners in the best picture books category. The other four winners were Quebec publisher Editions Les 400 Coups with “It’s My War” by Thomas Scotto, illustrated by Barroux; French publisher Gallimard Jeunesse’s “Chien des Villes” by Alexandra Garibal, illustrated by Fred Benaglia; Daylight Publishing for “The Plaits” by author and illustrator Hei Mi, and Jiangsu Phoenix Juvenile and Children’s Publishing Ltd for “Old Tyre” by Jia Wei, illustrated by Zhu Chengliang.

The winners in the Best Literary Work of 2016 category were all Chinese publishers: Tomorrow Publishing House for Zhang Wei’s “Looking for King Fish,” Daylight Publishing House’s “Firebrand” by Hans Christian Andersen award winner Cao Wenxuan, Chenguang Publishing House for “The Legendary Fox and the Youth” by Peng Yi, and Juvenile and Children’s House for “My Marble-Hearted Father” by Qin Wenjun, a story written by the author following the death of her father.

The Special Contribution award was given to Maria Jesus Gil from Spain, who is making “a significant contribution to the renovation of Spanish children’s literature” and serving as the president of the Hans Christian Andersen Award. She had also forged strong links with China in recent years, serving as a jury member for the Chen Bochui award and supporting the Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair.

The awards named after Baoshan native Chen Bochui (1906-1997) have further enriched its content and become more flexible and diverse in recent years.

Chen, a children’s author and illustrator, is sometimes described as “the Andersen of China” because of his strong influence on the development of Chinese children’s literature.

The organizers also launched a series of activities this year to encourage interaction, communication and promotion of international children’s literature. A forum was held to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the birth of Chen at the same time the winners of the year were unveiled.

The forum “Chen Bochui and Children’s Literature of China” focused on the role that Chen and the award play for the promotion of children’s literature in China.

Apart from the forum, an illustration exhibition as well as a children’s literature contest were also held which received thousands of works submitted by illustrators and writers from China and overseas.

The Chen Bochui’s Study attracted more than 80,000 visitors during the 2016 Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair.

Chen Bochui Children’s Literature Awards, founded in 1981, is the first literature award named after a famous writer in China authorized by State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television.

Its origins lay in the heritage of Chen and in the foundation he established in 1981 to promote reading among Chinese children.

The title was changed in 2014 to the Chen Bochui International Children’s Literature Awards and entries were opened to international writers.

So far, China has successfully hosted 26 award ceremonies. This literature award has been held for the longest time in China.

The annual awards ceremony, which also forms part of the China Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair, recognizes the work of writers, artists and publishers from around the world.

Today, the Chen Bochui awards are a competition judged by an international jury of children’s literature creators, critics and academics, invited to select the most inspiring children’s contents of the year and honor those who have contributed to make books and reading more attractive to the younger ones.
