HANGZHOU will build 5 million square meters of underground spaces for mixed use every year between 2016 and 2020, according to a municipal plan disclosed recently.
By 2020, underground spaces in Hangzhou are expected to total 82.6 million square meters, a large portion of them underneath Yan’an Road and around the West Lake area. They will include 87 subway stations.
The plan is the city’s first for underground facilities in nine urban districts including Shangcheng, Xiacheng and Binjiang; three key areas namely Yan’an Road, West Lake area and Qianjiang New Town; eight sub-centers and 11 suburban hubs.
In the first half of the year, Hangzhou finished building 3.4 million square meters of underground space.
