HANGZHOU will build 5 million square meters of underground spaces for mixed use every year between 2016 and 2020, according to a municipal plan disclosed recently.

The plan is the city’s first for underground facilities in nine urban districts including Shangcheng, Xiacheng and Binjiang; three key areas namely Yan’an Road, West Lake area and Qianjiang New Town; eight sub-centers and 11 suburban hubs.

In the first half of the year, Hangzhou finished building 3.4 million square meters of underground space.
