Stats on city’s seniors
PERMANENT Hangzhou residents aged over 60 exceeded 1.59 million last year, 82,300 more than in 2015, and accounting for 21.55 percent of the city’s population. About 261,800 residents are over 80 years old.
Shangcheng District has 987,000 people over 60, representing 30.20 percent of its population, followed by Xiaoshan District with 259,700 (23.11 percent) and Yuhang District with 201,100 (20.43 percent).
Xiaoshan has 38,900 people aged over 80, including 95 centenarians. Hangzhou counted 430 centenarians last year, 70 more than in 2015. Wu Zhiying, 108, is the oldest person in Hangzhou. She was born in May 1908 and now lives in Jianggan District.
Hangzhou’s senior population is expected to expand by about 100,000 this year. The city government plans to open 50 more service centers for old people and make sure each district or county has at least one nursing home for local seniors.
