‘MOST Beautiful’ poll
Thirty residents of Hangzhou, including one foreigner, entered the final online vote for “The Most Beautiful Hangzhou Citizens.”
Tim Clancy from Australia is one of the candidates. He hosted a TV program named “West Lake Tour with Tim” for Hangzhou TV. The show was popular among expats during the G20 Summit in Hangzhou in September.
Clancy first traveled to China in 2007 to study through an international cultural exchange. The linguistic expert has been pursuing his degree since 2014 at Zhejiang University on a full scholarship under the Ministry of Education.
He is fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese. He can also speak Japanese, Korean, Italian, Turkish, as well as his native English. Tim’s wife comes from Jinhua in Zhejiang Province.
Together with his wife, he set up a group to help foreigners with everything from seeing doctors, finding schools for their children and renting flats. The group has attracted more than 200 members.
Entering its fourth year, “The Most Beautiful Hangzhou Citizens” awards aim to honor people who have performed good deeds or demonstrated good morals in their work and personal lives.
The top 10 candidates chosen by online poll will claim the “Most Beautiful” title this year, although the achievements of all 30 candidates will be displayed at Wushan Square.
‘Top 10 Netizens’
Ten local residents were named among Hangzhou’s “Top 10 Netizens” of 2016 recently through online voting and evaluation by a panel of judges.
Among those awarded was Doctor Li Donghua, 39, from neighboring Anhui Province. Li set up an online forum in 2007 and a volunteer group in 2010 to provide free medical consultation services. In 2015, Li and his team developed an app that has over 300 registered volunteers.
Apart from Li, the other nine winners include: barber Zhang Nengqing, 37, who has been providing free hairdressing service for seniors since 2000; nurse Chai Tingting, 31, who helped raise 100,000 yuan (US$14,405) through crowd funding for a coma patient; photographer Cheng Fang and Cheng Xiao, both 29, who spent five years making an eight-minute video about Hangzhou. The video has received over 50 million clicks since it was released online in April.
New Metro projects
Hangzhou passengers will be able to transfer between Metro Line 7 and Line 1 at Xiaoshan International Airport in the future, according to a public notice posted online.
Hangzhou City Public Resources Trading website put up a request for bids on projects related to Metro Line 7 and the third phase of Line 1.
Metro Line 7 will stretch 47.6 kilometers with 23 underground stations, including eight interchange stations. It will connect Hangzhou Railway Station with Xiaoshan International Airport as well as improve connectivity between the two CBDs, Qianjiang New City and Qianjiang Century City.
The third phase of Metro Line 1 will extend 12.2 kilometers with five underground stations, including one interchange station at Xiaoshan International Airport.
The first Metro line to the airport will start operation in 2019.
By 2022, when Hangzhou hosts the Asian Games, the city will have 10 Metro lines connecting nine districts.
Lonely Planet nod
Lonely Planet, the largest travel guide book publisher in the world, recently selected seven great travel destinations for the New Year, and Hangzhou was among them.
According to Lonely Planet: “Visit the idyllic city of Hangzhou for a peaceful way to see in 2017. Follow the footpath alongside West Lake in the morning to see the mist covering the water, then climb the hill to visit Yongfu Temple.”
Other destinations include Matera in Italy, New Orleans in the United States, Melbourne and Sydney in Australia, Las Palmas in Gran Canaria and Nassau in the Bahamas.
This is not the first time Hangzhou has made a prominent Western media recommendation list. In January, the New York Times published a list of 52 top travel destinations that included the city.
In December 2015, world tourism industry flagship magazine Travel+Leisure added Hangzhou to a list of the “most valuable” destinations for visitors in 2016.
