New Kerry Center a paradise for local foodies

ABARBERSHOP crossed with a bar, a clothing boutique run by a famed designer and architect duo, a French cosmetic shop selling products made with Hangzhou dragonwell green tea — these are just a few of the highlights in the newly-opened Kerry Center in Hangzhou.

The center is in downtown, just opposite the C5 exit of Fengqi Road metro station at the site of the Midtown Shangri-La Hangzhou.

Other stand-outs include Starbucks’ second Starbucks Reserve location in the city, Kinsole Glasses from Hong Kong and the soon-to-open Mamala Restaurant, one of the top Western restaurants in Hangzhou.

The center is already drawing foodies from far and wide. Here’s your guide to the new shopping center’s tastiest destinations.

Zhang Zetian, the former tea shop attendant who rose to Internet celebrity after marrying JD.com CEO Liu Qiangdong, made headlines last year with the opening of her up-scale tea shop in Shanghai.

Her latest tea venture opened on the ground-floor of the Kerry Center last month, next to Starbucks Reserve.

InWe Tea lures customers with its slogan “you can’t buy happiness, but you can buy tea, and that’s kind of the same thing.”

Unlike a traditional tea house, inWE looks like a cafe with its amiable décor. Part of the shop is in a public area with polygon tables and comfortable wooden chairs; while a more secluded section features sound-muffling alcoves with fabric sofas perfect for meeting, reading or working solo.

Teas here are served hot, warm or iced. Hot teas are served in glass vessels, while iced and cold teas come in bottles. The milk tea comes in plastic disposable cups.

Traditional favorites like green tea, Oolong tea and black tea, however, are made with a siphon machine which controls water temperature, volume and pressure intensity.

“The machine was developed after hundreds of experiments,” explained the shop manager Zhou Yunsheng, who added that it ensures the nutrition of tea is fully abstracted while bitterness is not.

Apart from hot beverages, tea mixed with enzymes offer relief from the summer heat due to its sour and sweet flavor, and flower or fruit teas mixed with milk and sea salt can be served warm or cold. Oolong, black and green tea can also be served cold, using cold soaked tea leaves.

Drink prices start at 28 yuan (US$4.21). Packaged tea leaves are also available between 49 and 59 yuan.

It is an up-market gastropub offering specialty craft beer, innovative dishes and live music. “Drink awesome beer for awesome times,” is the slogan of the bar at the newly-opened Midtown Shangri-La Hotel.

The awesome beer in question is brewed by resident brew-master Josh Staines from Australia. Also on offer are a selection of ales, pale ales, porters, lagers and stouts. Beers are priced as low as 38 yuan before 9pm.

Staines used to work at James Squire, the largest Australian brewery company, as the chief brewer.

The kitchen serves modern Asian tapas, as well as premium grilled meats.

The bar design features nine barrels filled with 1,300 liters of beer, and 990 metal and wood cube pillars crisscrossing each other. There’s over 700 crystal glasses decorating the space, as well as a wall decorated with Chinese wood sculptures.

Customer can choose to sit in a quiet and spacious hall, the bustling band area, an open outdoor area, or on large soft couches.
