Ma & Morley Scholarship

THE University of Newcastle in Australia announced the establishment of a scholarship program supported by the Jack Ma Foundation.

The foundation, set up by Alibaba’s billionaire founder Jack Ma, will give the university US$20 million for the scholarship program. It is the largest philanthropic donation the school has ever received.

Ma was joined by New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian, University Chancellor Paul Jeans and others to announce the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program, which is to honor his friendship with Newcastle’s Morley family, which Ma met as a teenager in Hangzhou in 1980.

In its first year, the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program will provide 50 UON scholarships and 10 one-off scholarships for exchange students. When the program reaches full capacity, it will support 90 students a year.

UON Vice Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen said the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program will have an impact on the lives of students and shape the next generation of leaders.

“Through this remarkable friendship spanning decades, a new generation of talented students will have the opportunity to reach their full personal and professional potential,” she said.
