Historic European art show

More than 100 European sculptures, paintings and enamel artworks from the 18th and 19th centuries will be displayed at Hangzhou Library in a free exhibition, which opens on September 28.

“A public library is not just a place for reading but also a venue for lectures and exhibitions. Hangzhou Library added the European art gallery in an effort for diversity,” said Chu Shuqing, curator of the library.

Jean-Luc Martinez, director of the Louvre, said the European gallery will act as a bridge for cultural exchanges between East and West.

“It’s not easy to collect top-quality artworks and bring them back to China,” said Wu Jing, a Wenzhou woman entrepreneur, who obtained a three-year free lease to run the European art gallery at the library.
