Green city
HANGZHOU has been named one of the “40 National Ecological Cities, Counties and Districts” by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
A total of seven Hangzhou districts and counties are on this list, including Xiaoshan, Fuyang, Xihu, and Yuhang districts and Tonglu, Chun’an, and Lin’an counties.
Hangzhou began implementing a strategy of being an “environmentally friendly city” as early as 2002, and this August, the city was made a national ecological city by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
During the first half of the year, the number of days with good air quality reached 123, an improvement over 2013, 2014, and 2015, by 12, 18, and 16 days respectively. This was achieved by measures that included the closure of all coal-fired power plants in the city as well as Hangzhou Iron and Steel Group’s Banshan Base. And 226,600 highly polluted vehicles have been banned from the roads, the highest number in Zhejiang Province. Water quality has also improved in West Lake and Qiandao Lake, and is now 100 percent certified.
