Forestry plan lays out city’s green ambitions

HANGZHOU authorities recently unveiled their 13th five-year plan for the city’s forestry development. The plan includes the expected construction of five wetland parks, six ecological belts and six suburb parks over the period.

At present, Hangzhou boasts three wetland parks — namely: Xixi National Wetland Park in the city’s west, Gulugulu Island in Fuyang County and Nanbao Wetland in Tonglu County.

Among them, Xixi is a national-level wetland reserve. Dubbed “the lung of Hangzhou,” the wetlands are great for bird watching and flower viewing throughout the year.

Gulugulu Island is a multi-function recreational area that’s perfect for family outings, barbecuing and fishing.

Nanbao Wetland is still under construction. It is located at the upper reaches of Fenshui River, in Fenshui Town in Tonglu. The planned area covers 1,824 hectares, and local authorities expect to build it into an ecological education base.

For the current five-year plan period, authorities plan to build wetland parks at Dajiangdong, Fuchun River, the Grand Canal, Xiang Lake and Sanbaitan.

Among locals, Xiang Lake is often described as the “sister” of West Lake. It is located near the Yue Kingdom City Relic and Kuahu Bridge Cultural Relic Site.

Saibaitan is Yuhang District’s largest lake. It connects with the Grand Canal and possesses ample fishery resources.

The six ecological belts cover most of the city’s natural landscape, plantations and popular scenic spots, including Longwu, Chao Mountain and Gaoting Mountain.

Longjing Village is famous for its tea but fewer people realize that Longwu Village also produces high-end Longjing tea. The village includes several hectares of tea gardens and since ancient times has been known for its tea output. Even today, most villagers in Longwu earn their living through tea growing.

Chao Mountain is one of many places in Hangzhou that boast beautiful plum trees, yet few can offer them in such large quantities. Each spring, around 60,000 of the sweet-smelling white, yellow and pink flowering trees come into bloom on the mountain.

Gaoting Mountain is situated in the northeast of Hangzhou and has been noted for its peach blossoms for centuries. Throughout history, the mountain’s picturesque scenery has drawn poets and writers like Su Shi, Bai Juyi, Lu You and the contemporary author Yu Dafu.

The six planed suburb parks are mainly situated along the edge of downtown Hangzhou, where they are expected to help improve the local climate and urban environment.

The Xinjie Plant Nursery Park is part of a planed ecological belt covering the Qinghua, Hangwu Mountain and Xinjie areas. In addition to being a place to cultivate plants and flowers, the park is also planned as an ecological sightseeing area.

The Chengbei Grand Canal Park sits between Kangqiao and Tangqi Town. The 26-sqaure-kilometer park will serve as an ecological link to downtown Hangzhou.

The area between Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway and G60 Expressway is zoned as Qiaosi Park, which will create a green island between Xiasha and Linping.

Xiang Lake and the western area of Qiantang River will be turned into Xiang Lake Leisure Park, an area for physical exercise.

The Zhongtai-Xianling Park is expected to be a new destination for hiking. The government will pave roads winding along the mountains, which would provide people with a tranquil, picturesque hiking route during the weekends.

In Anxi Town of Yuhang District, two pagodas sit opposite each other across the Tiaoxi River. They are important landmarks that serve as a compass for locals in the area. However, few people outside the town know of them.

Meanwhile, the town also boasts hectares of forest. Now, the local government will incorporate it and the neighboring Tianmu Mountain into Dongmingshan Park, which has both cultural sites and natural views.
