Lufthansa pilots on strike for 3rd day
LUFTHANSA has canceled hundreds more flights as pilots at Germany’s largest airline went on strike for the third consecutive day in an increasingly acrimonious labor dispute.
Nearly 800 short- and medium-haul Lufthansa flights were canceled yesterday, including 90 related to an Italian air traffic controllers’ strike, and the Vereinigung Cockpit union said it would target long-haul flights today.
The dispute hinges on plans by Lufthansa to scrap an arrangement under which pilots can retire at 55 and receive up to 60 percent of their pay until they reach the statutory retirement age of 65.
Union spokeswoman Ilona Ritter said they’re willing to talk but it would “require Lufthansa to demonstrate a serious will” to resolve the dispute.
Lufthansa, meanwhile, said it already presented a better offer this month, and that by escalating the strikes the union “is moving itself farther away from a solution.”
On Wednesday, some 750 flights had been grounded affecting 80,000 passengers.
On Thursday, 84 long-haul flights out of a total 153 taking off from Germany were hit, grounding 18,000 passengers.
