Garuda soars to win ‘World’s Best Cabin Staff’ award

GARUDA Indonesia Airlines has been awarded “The World’s Best Cabin Staff” by Skytrax London at the Farnborough International Airshow this year.

It was the third time that the airline of Indonesia was awarded, after winning “The World’s Best Regional Airline” in 2012 and “The World’s Best Economy Class” in 2013.

Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, presented the award to the president and CEO of Garuda Indonesia, Emirsyah Satar, during the biggest airshow in the world.

“I would certainly like to thank Skytrax and all of our loyal customers for recognizing the efforts we have made in our services,” said Satar at the award ceremony.

The award was given to Garuda Indonesia based on a global customer satisfaction survey conducted by Skytrax of more than 18 million passengers between August 2013 and May 2014.

To better serve Chinese passengers, the airline launched recruitment for Chinese flight attendants on August 12 in Shanghai. Twenty-nine candidates wearing traditional cheongsams showcased their abilities and wisdom in a stage show at the event. They were selected from over 800 participants from across China after the recruitment was launched in June.

"The Chinese crews are expected to make our Chinese customers feel at home since China has also always been the most important market for Garuda," said I Wayan Subagia, vice president of Garuda Indonesia China Region.

Subagia said he also believed the Skytrax award will help the newly recruited Chinese crews to carry on the spirit of the airline as well as provide satisfying services. The airline has so far hired 35 Chinese crew members.

Garuda Indonesia introduced its service, the “Garuda Indonesia Experience,” in 2009. The service blends the Indonesia’s warm and gracious hospitality as well as unique atmosphere with the airline’s professional service.

However, Subagia said safety remains the top priority for the airline with “zero tolerance” and “no excuse.”

The airline has implemented a series of measures and training courses for its personnel to ensure safety. A Safety Management System education and training has been held for all personnel to provide them with a safe, healthy work environment.

The carrier also undertakes regular safety audits on the safety management system which reviews all aspects to improve the overall level of safety and minimize accidents attributable to organizational factors.

In another innovation in its service, Indonesian immigration officers have launched an on-flight visa application service for Chinese passengers onboard flights from Shanghai to Jakarta starting last March.

The frequency of the flights from Chinese cities to Jakarta will also be increased soon to fly more Chinese passengers to Indonesia, Subagia said.

“The Chinese passengers traveling abroad can feel quite at home during their flights with Garuda Indonesia, as well as feel the hospitality and nuances that are uniquely Indonesia, even before they arrive in the country,” he said.
