Garuda Indonesia plans monthly chartered flights

GARUDA Indonesia Airlines plans to fly monthly charters from 10 Chinese cities this year to tap a “potential 100 million travelers,” president and CEO M. Arif Wibowo told Shanghai Daily in an exclusive interview.

“We see the huge demand of a potential 100 million travelers in China’s market,” Wibowo said. “Garuda feels optimistic about adding more destinations in China in 2015.”

The monthly chartered flights will begin from mid-February and connect Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Nanjing, Zhengzhou, Kunming, Jinan, Harbin, Xi’an and Shenyang to Bali and Manado.

Garuda, which received a “5-star Airline” award from airline review organization Skytrax, aims to enhance its international network by increasing its destinations to 154 from 89. It also eyes to nearly triple overall passenger numbers to 35.2 million under a five-year plan, “Quantum Leap,” that ends this year.

“We aim to become a global player in the next five-year plan and China will be the one of our focuses,” Wibowo said.

He also said Garuda will halve the frequency of Tokyo-Jakarta flights to twice a day and transfer the capacity to China and the Middle East.

Between January and November 2014, 883,752 Chinese visited the country, said Indonesia’s Central Bureau of Statistics. Indonesia aims to draw 2 million tourists from China this year.
