Cruise terminal set for expansion

SHANGHAI will build two more terminals at Asia’s largest cruise liner port located in Baoshan District this year and offer more services to tap the rising demand of domestic tourists, officials said yesterday.
The Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal will also have a 380-meter-long dock and a 446-meter-long dock built along the Yangtze River together with the two terminal buildings by 2017, said Wang Younong, the terminal’s chairman of the board.
On completion, two 150,000-ton and two 230,000-ton cruise liners will be able to berth at the port simultaneously, said Wang. The port, opened in October 2011, can now serve two cruise liners at the same time.
Electric generators will be built to provide power while the liners are berthed to reduce air pollution.
The port is set to receive nearly 500 cruise liners, including the world’s most luxurious Sapphire Princess and Quantum of the Seas. Around 2.8 million passengers from both home and abroad are also expected to arrive by the end of 2016, a surge of 85 percent annually.
To better serve domestic passengers, the terminal plans to cooperate with Shanghai Railway Bureau to run chartered trains to take cruise passengers to the city’s Hongqiao Railway Station. Shuttle buses will then ferry passengers to the terminal directly, Wang said.
Passengers can also check in their luggage at the Baoyang Road Station of Metro Line 3 which will be renamed Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal Station, he added.
