China Eastern culture manifests spirit of helping

A public service song and its music video, Lucky to be with you, became popular among passengers after it was broadcast on more than 2,000 China Eastern daily flights.

The song and its MV were first performed by four young pop singers on the popular television show, The Voice of China, on Zhejiang Satellite TV.

The song and the video recount several short stories about how friends, colleagues and strangers help each other and it is hoped that through their story-telling in song, the public will be encouraged to have more offline communications in the Internet era, the Shanghai-based airline said.

The video, broadcast on over 500 aircraft of the airline, attracted many fans to comment on microblogs on Weibo.com and WeChat. Many netizens and passengers ask to make appointments with strangers to travel together or meet on China Eastern flights as sung in the video.

The stories in the video originated from several real stories in daily life of the singers. Li Jiage, one of the singers and performers in video, played the role of a female motorcycle rider with a warm heart and is always ready to help others.

One day, Li jumped off the motorcycle to stop a fast moving vehicle to protect many children who wanted to cross a road.

The driver, Yu Feng, another popular singer, was moved by her behavior and helped Li push a full loaded tricycle for a rubbish collector together. Li said it was “lucky to be with you” to Yu.

In another story in the video, the other two singers Zhang Bichen and Luo Jingwen played the roles of two colleagues. The female white-collar Zhang forgot to bring a USB storage for a presentation to her boss. Her warm-hearted colleague Luo then passed a backup USB storage to her before the presentation began.

“We don’t have to offer a hand to others only during emergencies, but can help each other in trivial things in daily life,” said Luo.

China Eastern selected to broadcast the video on its aircraft because the spirit of helping each other as promoted in the song and video is imbued into the business culture of the carrier, an official with the airline said.

“The MV reminds me that my daily job is to communicate with passengers,” a China Eastern flight attendant said on her microblog account.

She said the relationship between flight attendants and passengers is the same with those performed in the video. “A cup of water or a towel can present our warm hearts to the passengers,” she added.

The airline has also been performing the spirit to always help its passengers, the official said.

About 4,000 Chinese tourists were stranded in quake-hit Nepal as airlines raced to evacuate them following a 7.9-magnitude earthquake in the central, western, mid-western and far-western parts of Nepal on April 25, according to the China National Tourism Administration.

China Eastern and other major Chinese airlines sent aircraft after the earthquake to evacuate the stranded Chinese passengers. As of 4pm on April 26, Chinese airlines had evacuated more than 1,000 nationals from Nepal, where the earthquake has killed at least 3,218 people, including four Chinese. Chinese carriers flew about 1,200 people home every day during the evacuation though the earthquake was followed by at least 15 strong aftershocks.

Furthermore, China Eastern has also asked its employees to take part in social welfare campaigns during their leisure time.

Nearly all China Eastern employees have taken part in various campaigns to help poor students and families. The airline’s employees have helped over 100,000 people in the last five years, according to the carrier.

“We should help others on trivial things that can mostly drive the development of China’s philanthropy,” the airline’s official said.

One of the airline’s passengers said the sentence in the lyrics of the song that “only you can fly with me” expressed their feelings to China Eastern Airlines.
