Third-party streaming websites ordered removed from Internet TV set-top boxes

THE State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television has ordered third-party streaming websites to be removed from Internet TV set-top boxes in an effort to streamline the services and prevent illegal content from being broadcast.

The administration earlier this month ordered local management authorities to close download links for third-party software on the Wasu set-top box and BesTV set-top box since they offered technical support for "vulgar and pirated programs" to be viewed on TV, iFeng.com reported today, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Wasu Media Holding, which operates Alibaba's TV set-top box, said today it's working with government authorities to remove these third-party applications from its set-top box system.

The administration said in an earlier notice that set-top box operators could only work with content providers that have Internet TV licenses. They can?t provide Internet content to viewers, including those on video streaming sites, it said.

Industry watchers suggest this may signal tougher management for content to be viewed on TV sets in an effort to reign in pirated videos and programs.
