Unilever sees high hopes for 3rd plant in Sichuan

UNILEVER’S third manufacturing plant in Sichuan Province will help the Anglo-Dutch giant meet demand of consumers in western China and Southeast Asian countries, the company said yesterday.

“China is still the best or at least one of the best countries in the world for us to invest in,” Marijn van Tiggelen, president of Unilever North Asia, said at a media briefing after the launch ceremony for the Meishan plant which started operations yesterday.

“We hold a optimistic view about this new plant to satisfy the demand in southwest China.”

The laundry powder plant, with an initial investment of 300 million yuan (US$48 million), plans to have an annual capacity of 200,000 tons. Production made in Meishan, Sichuan Province, will serve the consumer needs of western China cities and Southeast Asian countries.

The 26.7-hectare plant is expected to become one of the Anglo-Dutch consumer goods company’s biggest factories worldwide.

“We are studying a second phase and hopefully to invest about 10 billion yuan employing 1,000 local workers in 10 years,” Zeng Xiwen, vice president for Unilever North Asia, said.

Meishan was chosen for its cost saving in transport due to its location along the Chinese government’s Silk Road Economic Belt program.

Unilever, which also has two plants in Anhui Province and Tianjin, is looking at a fourth food factory in Tianjin. The company aims to boost its total sales in the country to 35 billion yuan by 2020 from nearly 20 billion yuan currently.
